The Turning of the Balance
There is a truth the world seldom says aloud: favor is not poured out evenly. Some lives receive far more than they will ever find a use for, cup after cup, until it runs past the rim and pools, unspent, around their feet.
The Concord of the Even Hand exists to tend that imbalance. Once in a great while, in the work they call the Turning of the Balance, they gather the overflow that spills, unused, from the over-provided, whom they name the Overbrimming, and carry it to the pans of those who have gone without.
It is only fairness, long overdue, is it not? A weight lifted from one side that was never going to feel it, and set down at last on a side that has waited years for its turn.
Nothing is taken by force.
I know the question a tender heart asks next: does someone lose, so that I may gain? No, Hemal. Hear me clearly. The Overbrimming never feel the drawing-down.
What is gathered is only the surplus already spilling past their rim, the part they were never going to reach for in a hundred lifetimes.
Nothing is taken by force. Nothing is drawn that was ever truly used. When the Turning is done, they remain exactly as they were: more than provided for, wanting for nothing at all…

Understand what the Turning has actually done. Every life runs along a road.

When the pans came to rest and I saw your name held on the favored side, one task remained: to carry your crossing to the gate before it sealed.
I began the work. And then, without warning, a cold crowd of thoughts poured into me, that I was too slow, that you would not want this, that I had no business trying at all.
My hands began to tremble. My breath caught. I fumbled, and I lost precious moments I could not spare…
By the time I pressed through them and reached the gate, Hemal, it was already swinging shut. The Keepers of the Even Hand had begun to turn away. I was too late…
I called you back across the closing gate.
